Fresh Concrete Patio Gives This Backyard a Solid Foundation

Here's what we ended up with on this one. A wide, smooth concrete patio running right off the back of the house, with a separate step pad leading out to the yard. The surface is troweled flat with clean control joints cut through - those are the straight lines you see dividing the slab. Those joints are planned, not an afterthought. They tell the concrete where to crack if it ever shifts, so you don't end up with random fractures splitting across the middle of your patio years down the road.

The step pad off the side is a nice touch too. Instead of stepping straight down from the patio edge onto grass and dirt, there's a solid landing point. It's one of those small details that makes the finished product feel more complete - and more functional.
